‘Call of the Wild’ Leads Race Against ‘Sonic’ With $27.8 Million Opening at Box Office
20th Century Studios’ “The Call of the Wild” is doing better than industry projections expected, with Saturday morning estimates now projecting a $27.8 million opening for the family adaptation of Jack London’s short story.

If that result holds after Saturday matinees, it will be enough to take the No. 1 spot from Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which is currently estimated for a $24.8 million second weekend. That’s a 57% drop from the film’s $58 million opening weekend, but consistent with the $25.1 million second weekend earned by “Detective Pikachu” last May. It also makes “Sonic” the first Paramount release in over a year to cross the $100 million domestic mark, the last being the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee.”

The Call of the Wild” is receiving strong audience reception with an A- on CinemaScore and a 4/5 on Postrak. Critics have also been somewhat positive with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score. However, the film’s heavy use

‘Star Wars’ Secret Sith Exegol Feature: J.D. Dillard & Matt Owens Developing
Deadline has confirmed that a new Star Wars feature is in the works with Sleight filmmaker J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scribe Matt Owens, but those with knowledge say that it’s not definite whether it’s for Disney+ or the big screen. Reportedly the project will take place on the hidden Sith planet of Exegol, which was introduced in last December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This past 4Q, Disney had two hits, the Disney+ series The Mandalorian which drove the streamer’s near 30M subscribers, and the $1.06 billion-grossing Skywalker trilogy finale The Rise of Skywalker. However, in the wake of the misfiring of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story ($393M WW) the studio has been hesitant about aggressively ramping up what was a huge Star Wars feature spinoff universe. And with the success of the Jon Favreau created Mandalorian, it’s made

Friday Ratings: ‘WWE Friday Night SmackDown’ Wins, ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ Finale Wilts
Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown resumed its place atop the Friday demo wars, scoring an 0.7 for its two-hours of mayhem.

WWE Super ShowDown is looming, and Friday’s match saw Hall of Famer Goldberg leveled “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, while Naomi is headed for a SmackDown Women’s Championship Match with Bayley.

For ABC, the Fresh Off The Boat finale was a two-parter, with the first half-hour clocking in at 0.5 and the second, the actual finale of the series, coming in a surprisingly low 0.4, with a much smaller audience. Newsmag 20/20 held at an 0.4, but gained in total audience from the Fotb finale.

Elsewhere, the CBS crime drama lineup dipped a bit, as new broadcasts of MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 ticked down slightly to an 0.6, while a repeat of Blue Bloods came in at an 0.5. The shows amassed the largest overall audiences of the night.

‘Sonic’ Sprints Back to No. 1 at Box Office With $26.7 Million Second Weekend
It has been a back-and-forth race at the box office between Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” and 20th Century Studios’ “The Call of the Wild.” After the newly released Jack London adaptation took the lead on Friday, “Sonic” has retaken the No. 1 spot on Sunday morning charts with an estimated $26.7 million second weekend total.

The Call of the Wild,” which was estimated yesterday to take No. 1 with a $27 million opening, is now looking at a $25 million start from 3,752 screens. As both “Call” and “Sonic” are both aimed towards family audiences, totals for the two films relied heavily on turnout from that demographic for Saturday matinees. “Sonic” won out on that front, with its Saturday estimated grosses beating “Call of the Wild” $12 million to $10.2 million.

Sonic,” which is looking at a decent 54% drop from its video game adaptation record $58 million opening, is now estimated to have a 10-day total of $107 million.

Ventana Sur Sets 2020 Dates, a New Venue

Berlin — Ventana Sur, the biggest film-tv industry event in Latin America – and bulwarked by a hugely popular Cannes Film Week hosted by Thierry Fremaux – has set dates for its 12th edition, and announced a new venue in Buenos Aires.

Once Argentina’s imposing central post office, built in the Beaux-Arts style of France’s Second Empire – the Cck could sit easily at one end of the Champs Elysées – the building, a cultural center since 2015, will offer Ventana Sur far more space, said the Cannes Film Market’s Jér?me Paillard, Ventana Sur co-director, said at Berlin.

Facilities offered by the Cck include a 1,950-set concert hall and multiple auditoriums. Space, indeed has become major challenge for the event as it has grown dramatically from its foundation by the Cannes Marché du Film,

Oliver Berben’s presentation on Monday of Constantin Television’s lineup and production philosophy at the Berlinale Series Market is a reminder that Constantin Film not only has some of the most ambitious movie productions coming out of Europe – think Paul W.S. Cannes Film Festival Plots Major Expansion to Vr Program

Cannes Xr, the Marché du Film’s program dedicated to immersive and augmented reality content, is set to expand.

For its second edition, Cannes Xr has partnered with tech creator Positron and Brogent Technologies to introduce a new Vr theater, dedicated space and competition.

While keeping its 700-square meter exhibition space in the basement of Cannes’ Palais des Festivals, the program will also set up a second front at The Palm Beach, a former casino on the other side of the Croisette. The venue will offer 1600 square meters of exhibition space, as well as outdoor reception areas with a beachfront view.

“Even last year, it was clear to us that the Palais basement would not allow us to fully develop the Xr section,” Cannes Xr head Elie Levasseur tells Variety.

“It was difficult to mount projects and it was hard for Xr professionals to stay in the basement without seeing the sun.

Europe-China Co-Prod ‘The Italian Recipe’ Immune to Coronavirus (Exclusive)

Europe-China Co-Prod ‘The Italian Recipe’ Immune to Coronavirus (Exclusive)
With production in China suffering a coronavirus-imposed slowdown, “The Italian Recipe” is one co-production between Europe and China that is poised to potentially capitalize on the resulting dearth of Chinese content. It is positioned to advance European cinema’s efforts to make inroads in China.

“The Italian Recipe,” in which a famous Chinese pop singer travels to Rome for a trashy reality show and cavorts there with a Chinese Cinderella who dreams of becoming a chef, was spawned by the Bridging the Dragon (Btd) association. Btd will hold its annual panel next week on the sidelines of the Berlin Film Festival.

The romantic comedy is mostly set in Rome. The small portions located in Beijing were shot before the virus caused a China-wide production slowdown. Those portions being shot in the Italian capital are set to wrap soon.

Producer Cristiano Bortone, who is also the Btd lab’s founder, told

Hungarian Film Commissioner Csaba Kael on His Ambitious Plans for ‘Hollywood on the Danube’

Just months after assuming the role of Hungarian film commissioner, Csaba Káel has designs on revamping the film and television industries to boost content development and production, expand already formidable studio facilities and become a lynchpin for film and TV production and servicing that extends far beyond Budapest.

Káel took up his post in September, eight months after the death of former film commissioner Andy Vajna, the Hungarian-born producer who after a legendary stint in Hollywood in the 1980s and ‘90s returned to his native country, helping transform it into a thriving production hub while also overhauling its film financing system and introducing a cash rebate.

Káel is determined to build on that foundation, overseeing ambitious plans to integrate the Hungarian film and TV industries while boosting the capacity of what is already the second-biggest production hub in Europe, behind the U.K.

An important first step was taken at the start of the year,
